About the Artist

TWO FOR BRAZIL IS BORN

Two For Brazil started from a tribute concert on given on June 10th, 1998 for two of Brazilian music’s greatest names: Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz.

Chicago Cultural Center’s Peter McDowell called on Paulinho to play a tribute to Joao Gilberto, and on Greg to play a tribute to Getz.

Even though Paulinho and Greg had never played together, the concert went very well and the idea of recording and performing together was a natural consequence. The name Two For Brazil came from the fact that most Brazilian music is written in 2/4 and that we are a duo dedicated to Brazilian musical format.

Two for Brazil

Two For Brazil is the new CD release from guitarist/vocalist Paulinho Garcia and saxophonist/flutist Greg Fishman. These two great artists perform the exciting and beautiful bossa nava/samba music which is the heart and soul of their duo, TWO FOR BRAZIL.

Review

Chicagoans may not realize how fortunate they are to have singer-guitarist Garcia and saxophonist Fishman in their midst. Garcia’s singing of Brazilian fare is as subtle, idiomatic and historically informed as one might hope to hear, his guitar playing providing gently undulating accompaniment.

Fishman can play tenor saxophone in a variety of styles, but he slips into the gently swaying rhythms and even-keel dynamics of Brazilian music with particular charm.

Together, these two create a sublimely understated music, at once respectful of South American folk traditions yet sleekly sophisticated.

Whoever suggested pairing Garcia and Fishman deserves a round of applause. It isn’t often that two jazz improvisers achieve comparable musical intimacy.

AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

This set of duets by tenor saxophonist Greg Fishman and pianist Jeremy Monteiro is full of strong melodies, lyrical and thoughtful improvising, and warm feelings. Fishman‘s tone is a little reminiscent of Stan Getz and the Four Brothers without sounding derivative while the supportive Monteiro features attractive chord voicings and a fine two-handed style. Together, Fishman and Monteiro bring out the beauty in eight selections that include ballads and medium-tempo romps, all from the mainstream jazz tradition. This delightful program is well worth checking out.

I’m excited to present my latest album – New Journey

This new CD features seven original tunes written when I was on tour in Bangkok, Singapore, and Japan. Melodic, straight-ahead jazz with a cool mix of Bebop and Brazilian styles. This is an all-acoustic recording with incredible fidelity, featuring my Chicago rhythm section of Dennis Luxion (piano), Eric Hochberg (bass), and Phil Gratteau (drums). Liner notes by the acclaimed Scott Yanow.

New Journey, released in 2016, features performances of seven originals with Greg’s top-notch quartet. “Most of these tunes were written when I was on concert tours of Bangkok, Singapore, and Japan. The music is mostly straight-ahead but with some unusual chord changes and twists.”

On New Journey, Fishman teams up with his regular Chicago rhythm section. He is rightfully enthusiastic about their abilities. “Dennis Luxion is a lyrical piano player with a sensitive touch, beautiful voicings, and comping that is really interactive. Eric Hochberg sets the groove and creates what I call a “long arc” on the bass — melodic lines that frequently stretch over an entire phrase. Phil Gratteau is a fantastic drummer who is very knowledgeable in a lot of styles, always stretching the music and making it sound personal, always playing in the moment.”
